Application of Gamazyme for Enzymatic Enhancement of Cow Dung Anaerobic Digestion for Biogas Production

Abstract Nigeria, with its abundant agricultural resources and significant cattle population, faces ongoing challenges in waste management and energy production. As such, this study examined the impact of applying Gamazyme for enzymatic enhancement on the anaerobic digestion of cow dung, employing specific enzyme formulations to increase biogas production. Enzyme-based products such as Gamazyme were utilized to assess their efficacy in boosting methane yield and improving substrate degradation efficiency in anaerobic digesters. The research focused on optimizing enzyme selection, dosage, and application methods to ensure compatibility with digester conditions and maximize performance. The results from the experiment showed that enzyme supplementation significantly reduced the hydraulic retention time from 30 days to 21 days, while methane yields was enhanced in the treated digesters. The control digester yielded 59.67% of methane, whereas the treated digesters A, B, C, and D achieved methane yields of 62.82%, 65.49%, 65.32%, and 69.81%, respectively. Correspondingly, biogas yields were higher in enzyme-treated digesters, with digester D having the highest value. This advancement addresses critical issues of waste management and energy shortages, providing a sustainable solution that also produces high-quality organic fertilizer. By integrating enzyme-enhanced anaerobic digestion, waste management procedure and energy production in Nigeria can be transformed, promoting environmental conservation, agricultural productivity, and economic growth. The findings revealed that adopting this technology can harness Nigeria's agricultural potential, contributing to a more renewable and prosperous future.
