Integrated AI Approach to Crude Oil Evacuation for Shallow Water Assets: Field X Case Study

Abstract The exploration and production of crude oil in Nigeria's shallow water fields have been pivotal to the nation's economy. However, the conventional methods of crude oil evacuation face numerous challenges, including pipeline vandalism, oil theft, and environmental concerns. This paper examines alternative crude oil evacuation methods to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and enhance security. The study begins with an overview of the current evacuation techniques, ‘primarily pipelines,’ highlighting their limitations and vulnerabilities. It proposes a virtual pipeline solution using specialized shallow-draft oil tankers or barges to transport the liquid stream from the production platform to an FPSO/FSO unit. Key considerations include technical and economic viability, environmental sustainability, and security implications. It also examines a case study of the successful implementation of this alternative in other regions, providing a comparative analysis of Nigeria's context. A reinforcement learning-based approach is proposed to manage the balance between operational costs and environmental sustainability. The RL agent learns to select between evacuation methods based on real-time data, optimize strategies to minimize risks, reduce costs, and ensure secure and sustainable transportation of crude oil, learning to make decisions that improve efficiency over time. The findings indicate that while no single method can completely replace traditional evacuation techniques, a hybrid approach integrating multiple alternatives may offer the best solution. This approach can mitigate risks, optimize costs, and enhance the resilience of crude oil evacuation systems in Nigeria's shallow water fields. In conclusion, the paper advocates for a strategic shift towards adopting alternative evacuation methods, emphasizing the need for government and industry collaboration to ensure sustainable and secure crude oil transportation and energy security.
