Leveraging NCDMB-CypherCrescent-University Synergy for Curriculum Innovation: Integrating SEPAL Enterprise into Petroleum Engineering Education in Nigeria
Abstract This strategic and empirical study explores an innovative academic–industry–government partnership aimed at transforming petroleum engineering education through the integration of advanced digital technologies. Specifically, it investigates the operationalization of SEPAL, an indigenous, system-based petroleum asset management software developed by CypherCrescent, as a pedagogical tool within Nigerian universities. The implementation is examined through the lens of the CypherCrescent–Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) collaboration model and guided by the Triple Helix framework, which evaluates the dynamic interplay between academia (curriculum design and delivery), industry (technology innovation), and government (policy and capacity development). The study employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating faculty surveys, structured interviews, and training performance assessments to evaluate SEPAL's integration across selected core and elective courses, including Reservoir Engineering (100% integration), Production Optimization (92.3%), and Well Test Analysis (84.6%). Quantitative data revealed significant increases in faculty competence across key technical domains, demonstrating that the training effectively bridged the knowledge gap between traditional teaching approaches and the digital competencies required for modern upstream operations. Faculty also reported strong implementation confidence, with detailed plans for curriculum integration and practical application in teaching. However, the study also identified key sustainability challenges, most notably power outages (84.6%), insufficient training time (38.5%), and limitations in ICT infrastructure and teaching resources (23.1%), which pose potential risks to long-term impact. These findings underscore the need for continued institutional support, infrastructure investment, and feedback-driven adaptation to ensure scalability and sustained adoption. SEPAL's integration promotes experiential, industry-aligned learning, equipping students with the analytical, technical, and decision-making skills aligned with global digital oilfield trends. The collaborative model has already demonstrated its capacity to produce industry-ready graduates and is strongly positioned to support Nigeria's broader energy transition and workforce development agenda. The study concludes by advocating for the replication and scaling of this model across sub-Saharan Africa and other resource-rich emerging economies as a pathway to build local capacity, enhance digital fluency, and align academic training with evolving industry demands.
