Epoxy Based Self Healing Coatings: A Breakthrough in Pipeline Protection and Longevity

Abstract In this review, epoxy based self-healing coatings are introduced as a novel solution to help keep pipeline integrity, reliability and lifespan. The coatings are developed to autonomously repair damage, reduce corrosion and alleviate failure risks. The integration of epoxy resin systems with embedded microcapsules containing healing agents, dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), provides sustainable and cost-effective materials that sustain ageing infrastructure significantly lower manual interventions. In order to realize this, microcapsules containing DCPD were loaded into epoxy-based coatings and embedded within a polymer matrix. Then, upon mechanical damage, the capsules rupture to release the healing agent that goes into reacting with a catalyst inside the coating which then seals cracks and repairs the protective barrier. Experiments were done in simulative environmental conditions and self-healing efficiency of coating was evaluated by spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and corrosion resistance testing in saline environments. It was observed that epoxy based self-healing coatings could recover up to 85% of the coating destroyed by the corrosion and reduce corrosion rates substantially as well as extending the lifetime of the coated materials. This was able to reduce maintenance costs by approximately 30% and extend operational lifespans by more than 50%. However, this demonstrates the remarkable contribution that epoxy based self-healing coatings can have to guarantee pipeline sustainability and reliability
