Active learning through thematic stations for occupational hygiene education in engineering

This study presents LabMove, an innovative active learning initiative designed to enhance the education of undergraduate students in occupational hygiene within the Mining and Petroleum Engineering programs. Implemented at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (USP), the project introduced rotating thematic laboratory stations focused on the practical assessment of exposure to physical and chemical environmental agents, such as noise, gases, heat, lighting, and vibration, based on procedures aligned with current Brazilian regulatory standards. Preliminary results from the 2025 pilot semester revealed significant academic performance gains, with a 15.4% increase in the average scores of technical reports and a 6.6% improvement in final course grades compared to the previous cohort. Beyond technical proficiency, the experience fostered the development of essential transversal competencies for professional practice, including critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork. Lessons learned from the initial implementation highlighted opportunities for improvement, such as the inclusion of new topics, most notably mineral dust exposure, and the optimization of time management during practical activities. These enhancements further reinforce the pedagogical impact of the initiative and its potential for adaptation and expansion. Aligned with current engineering curriculum reform guidelines, the project stands out as a promising, scalable, and replicable model of education committed to health, safety, and social responsibility in engineering.
