High-Throughput Techniques in Biology: Comprehensive Review of Technologies, Instrumentation, Data Analysis, and Applications
High-throughput (HT) biological technologies have transformed the interrogation of molecular and cellular systems, enabling massively parallel, cost-effective measurement of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, imaging, and phenotypic data. Analyzing thousands to millions of biological entities simultaneously, these methods underpin systems biology, biomedical discovery, precision medicine, and biotechnology. This review consolidates HT approaches-from sequencing and proteomics to screening, flow/mass cytometry, and highcontent imaging-describing core principles, instrumentation, measurable outputs, and computational analyses. It details experimental design, quality control, bioinformatics workflows, data management, ethical considerations, limitations, and interdisciplinary skills required. Applications across genomics, immunology, oncology, drug discovery, and systems biology are examined, concluding with emerging advances such as integrated single-cell multiomics, spatial profiling, microfluidic automation, and AI-based analysis (Reuter et al., 2015; Gunawan et al., 2023).
