A Monte Carlo model for analyzing the propagation of polarized TOF-LIDAR pulses through turbid media

Imaging systems based on pulsed light, such as time of flight (TOF) LiDAR, face significant challenges in turbid environments, such as turbid waters or adverse weather. Polarization has been suggested as an effective filtering method in such scenarios. We have developed a Monte Carlo algorithm to simulate the propagation of polarized pulsed signals in such conditions. The algorithm incorporates realistic media properties and has been used to test various experimental setups, manage different types of targets, adjust polarization configurations, and explore particle geometries. We have successfully characterized backscattering signals, showing their sensitivity to medium properties and linking visibility and backscattering energy. Polarization analysis indicates that circular polarization reduces scattering effects and highlights its relationship with the polarimetric features of imaged targets. The simulations also reveal that the presence of irregular particles can alter the anticipated trend behavior.
