Automating Engineering Document Reviews: Enhancing Efficiency and Consistency with Augmented Engineering Review (AER) System

The Augmented Engineering Review (AER) system is a transformative solution developed to address deficiencies and inconsistencies in the engineering document review process within the oil and gas industry. By automating end-to-end workflows and codifying engineering standards and lessons learned into a robust rules engine, AER ensures compliance, improves review quality, and reduces cycle times. Built on the PETRONAS Electronic Document Management System (P-EDMS), AER integrates advanced modules such as a Rules Builder, Data Ingestion for smart and non-smart data, and an Automated Workflow to streamline the review process. Pilot implementations have demonstrated significant improvements, including reduced review delays, enhanced consistency, and recurring value creation estimated at RM XXX+ million. The system also enables engineers to focus on higher-value tasks, such as design optimization, by automating routine reviews. With its ability to handle diverse data types and continuously evolve through feedback, AER represents a step-change in engineering productivity and quality. This paper discusses the development, implementation, and impact of AER, highlighting its potential to revolutionize engineering reviews and unlock substantial value for PETRONAS and its partners.
