The role of smart education platforms in enhancing community engagement: a systematic review
The evolution of smart education technologies has reshaped the traditional education system, enhanced learning outcomes, and supported community engagement. Smart education platforms integrate innovative tools like the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital learning environments to create interactive and personalized learning experiences. This study comprehensively explores how smart education platforms influence student engagement, teacher collaboration, and parental involvement while addressing challenges and limitations in data privacy, digital equity, and user resistance. A systematic review study and meta-analysis were conducted to synthesize findings from 13 research articles to highlight the importance of smart education platforms in improving community engagement and discuss their impact in building participatory and inclusive learning environments. Literature research was performed in IEEE Xplore, Springer, and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria included studies published within the last ten years focusing on digital learning, community engagement, and smart education platforms. Using a random-effects model with Cohen's d as the effect size metric, our meta-analysis revealed significant positive impacts across four domains. Digital equity initiatives showed 85% of studies reporting improved access in underserved regions through platforms like Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams. Personalized learning demonstrated moderate to large effect sizes (d = 0.45-0.75), with 70% of studies showing enhanced engagement and teacher satisfaction. Gamification achieved the largest effect size (d = 0.75), particularly for K-12 students. Community engagement showed 75% of studies reporting increased parental involvement through real-time communication tools. The pooled effect size of 0.62 (95% CI: 0.50-0.74) indicates moderate-to-large positive impacts on academic achievement and community engagement, though high heterogeneity (I² = 74.9%) suggests context-dependent effectiveness. Key challenges include digital divide barriers, privacy concerns, and implementation complexity in resource-constrained environments. These findings demonstrate that smart education platforms significantly enhance community engagement when supported by thoughtful design, adequate infrastructure, and equity-driven implementation strategies.
