Current Diagnosis and Management of Infective Endocarditis in Adults

Abstract
Infective endocarditis is a complex multiorgan process that can be difficult to diagnose and to treat. Infective endocarditis is an infection involving the endocardial surface of the heart with nearly a 100% mortality rate if left untreated. Unfortunately, the rates of infective endocarditis continue to increase due to intravenous drug use and comorbidities associated with an aging population. Owing to the high mortality rate and complex presentation, early detection and prompt treatment of infective endocarditis by an endocarditis team is imperative. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with infective endocarditis.
