Spatio- Temporal Surface Runoff Dynamics And Dam Discharge Estimation Of Periyar River Basin
Rainfall-runoff (RR) models are widely used in hydrology to adopt strategies and schemes for the sustainable management of river basins. In this paper, the Soil Conservation Services curve number (SCS CN) RR model is used to estimate the runoff in Periyar river basin for 20102020. The model calculates runoff depth using rainfall, land use & land cover (LULC) and soil texture. The study used Open Land Map Soil Texture, MODIS LULC and CHIRPS precipitation data. The estimated RR is further correlated with the dam discharge from Boothathankettu reservoir. Considering the controlled release from the dam, extreme events and no rain discharge have been removed to develop the model between the two. The model is trained and tested based on 80:20 data distribution. The model shows a decent relationship with $R^{2}$ of 0.68. The study shows the potential to estimate dam discharge in non-extreme scenario using RR model.
