Dual-Band Transparent Monopole Antenna for Satellite Internet Aboard Aircraft

This research presents the design of a dual-band transparent substrate antenna for satellite internet aboard aircraft, specifically for Wi-Fi download and upload. The proposed antenna is a triangular arrow-shaped monopole resembling a house, with two elongated elements at the back. It is fed by a tapered microstrip transmission line and utilizes a polycarbonate composite substrate with a dielectric constant (εr) of 2.8 and a thickness (h) of 1 mm. The proposed antenna supports bandwidths in the frequency ranges of 5.15–5.92 GHz and 7.82–16.00 GHz, with an omnidirectional radiation pattern and an average gain of 4.75 dBi. It effectively supports satellite internet applications in the Ku band. The antenna design was simulated using CST electromagnetic wave simulation software, and a prototype antenna was fabricated. The designed antenna exhibits a reflection coefficient of less than -10 dB throughout the frequency ranges of 5.2 GHz and 10.7–14.75 GHz, which are used for satellite internet services and are considered acceptable values in research terms. Additionally, the antenna is fabricated using a conductor sheet with a thickness of 0.035 mm, placed on a composite substrate material to form the antenna structure for satellite internet aboard aircraft.
