Treatment Experience of Three Cases of Burns Exceeding 20% Total Body Surface Area Using RECELL®

In burn injuries, early epithelialization is important because of complications, such as protein leakage from the wound surface and infection. In extensive burn cases, identifying suitable donor sites for skin grafts can present a significant challenge. We report three cases of burns exceeding 20% total body surface area, where cellular suspensions were prepared using the RECELL kit combined with high-magnification mesh split-thickness skin grafting, resulting in successful epithelialization in all cases. The surgical technique utilizing the RECELL kit is considered to be slightly easier than other treatments such as the use of autologous cultured epidermis. In addition, the required donor site area is relatively small, making it a valuable option for the treatment of extensive burns. However, in areas where RECELL cellular suspension was used alone, hypertrophic scars were observed, indicating the need for careful consideration of the case and method of application.
