Unit Commitment with Battery-Assisted Spinning Reserve in Solar-Integrated Power Systems
The increasing integration of renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, into power systems presents new challenges in maintaining system stability and minimizing operational costs. One major concern is the need for spinning reserves to compensate for the variability and uncertainty of solar power generation. This study analyzes the impact of incorporating battery energy storage systems (BESS) into the unit commitment process to enhance system stability and reduce reliance on spinning reserves. A mixed-integer programming (MIP) approach is employed to optimize unit commitment while considering solar power uncertainty and battery storage capabilities. The results demonstrate that integrating BESS significantly reduces the required spinning reserves, lowers overall system costs, and enhances grid reliability. This research highlights the potential of battery storage as a cost-effective solution for improving the efficiency of power system operations in renewable energy-integrated grids.
