High-Voltage and High-Pulse Repetition Frequency Pulse Generator Composed of Avalanche Transistor-Based Multiplex Power Synthesis Topology With Triggering Acceleration

The Marx-bank circuit (MBC) based on avalanche bipolar junction transistors (ABJTs) is usually applied in the pulse source of ultra-wideband radiation system and meets the pulse requirements of high voltage and narrow pulse width. However, a traditional MBC has the mutual limitations of “pulse amplitude-pulse repetition frequency (PRF)” due to its capacitive energy storage system. And ABJT triggered by slow voltage ramp in MBC has low reliability and low time base stability, which is not conducive to pulse synthesis applications. In this work, the output limitations of a single MBC and the pulse delay instability caused by unstable switching of ABJT triggered by slow voltage ramp are analyzed by simulation and experiment. On this basis, a modified multiplex power synthesis topologies (MPST) composed of triggering acceleration MBCs (TA-MBCs) and power combiner is proposed. The time base stability of ABJT is effectively improved by increasing triggering dV/dt</i>, and the main components of a TA-MBC are analyzed in detail. Moreover, the pulse synthesis characteristics and advantages of the modified TA-MPST are further analyzed, and the high amplitude, narrow pulse width and high PRF are verified. A TA-MPST composed of four 1×15-stage TA-MBCs achieves a pulse amplitude of 4.92 kV, a rise time of 1.06 ns, a dV/dt</i> of 4.64 kV/ns, a pulse width of 1.98 ns, and a PRF of 200 kHz. This investigation provides a reference for the power synthesis circuit based on ABJTs and its applications.
