Biodegradable hydrogel matrices functionalized with active compounds represent a rapidly evolving field with substantial practical potential across various industrial sectors. This study highlights the importance of developing sustainable, environmentally friendly biomaterials, specifically hydrogels synthesized from natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers. Hydrogels, characterized by their three-dimensional, hydrophilic polymer networks, exhibit critical properties including high absorptivity, elasticity and controllable mechanical characteristics, facilitating broad applications. Their functionalization involves the incorporation of active compounds, such as enzymes, antibodies, growth factors, vitamins, polyphenols, drugs, and nanoparticles into the hydrogel matrices. These active compounds provide specific functionalities, including catalytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and therapeutic effects. Methods for incorporating these compounds into hydrogels include physical entrapment, adsorption, and covalent bonding. Key factors affecting hydrogel functionality include polymer matrix composition, cross-link density, swelling capacity, compound properties(size, shape, solubility, charge), and environmental conditions (pH, temperature). The interaction between these parameters critically influences the kinetics and mechanisms of active compound release, which can occur via diffusion, swelling-induced diffusion, or matrix erosion. Based on the author's own research experience, practical applications demonstrated in this study encompass biocatalysts immobilization, diagnostic colorimetric assays, bioactive wound dressings, and health-oriented vegan food products. Specific examples include gelatin-based hydrogels for invertase immobilization, providing enhanced catalytic stability and operational efficiency; colorimetric hydrogel tests for β-galactosidase detection, facilitating rapid medical diagnostics; alginate-based hydrogels enriched with plant extracts for antimicrobial wound dressings; and nutritionally enhanced vegan hydrogel formulations tailored for dietary supplementation. Conclusively, biodegradable, functionalized hydrogels represent a significant leap towards environmentally responsible technologies, embodying principles of sustainability and circular economy, and promise substantial advancements in healthcare, diagnostics, and nutritional sectors.
