A Qualitative Study of the Impact of Danmaku on Students' Extraneous Cognitive Load in Online Teaching Videos

The appearance of Danmaku in online teaching videos has made information dissemination more efficient and has helped learners obtain a good learning experience. However, as an additional information stimulus, whether the bullet comments in teaching videos will cause external cognitive load on learners and the influencing factors of the external cognitive load caused by bullet comments still remain to be explored. In this study, the grounded theory method is used to analyze, with the help of Nvivo, whether the interaction form of bullet comments causes external cognitive load on learners and the key indicators of such load. The study discovers two key indicators, namely external factors and internal factors, and provides corresponding solutions, including the optimization of the bullet comment function and personalized settings; the construction of multi-dimensional strategies and mechanisms for the management of bullet comments on online learning platforms; and the adjustment strategies for internal factors based on the cognitive and psychological dimensions of learners. These measures contribute to the formation of a learner-centered bullet comment interaction guidance system oriented towards the learning experience, which can guide online learning.
