A Target Velocity Estimation Method for Dual Stepped Frequency Radar

Stepped frequency (SF) radar generates high resolution range profile (HRRP) via synthesizing bandwidth. Nevertheless, the motion of target will lead to range shift and energy divergence in HRRP, which makes motion compensation essentially before generating HRRP. Our team has accomplished the static HRRP imaging of the moving target by using a cross-transmitted dual SF waveform and a novel phase-cancellation technique (PCT) instead of estimating and compensating velocity. Whereas, the target speed remains an important parameter in certain specific application. Based on the previous work, this paper proposes a target velocity estimation method via dual SF waveform. This method estimates the target speed by comparing the similarity between the HRRP generated by the target echo after velocity compensation and the static HRRP via dual SF waveform and PCT. Simulation results show that the proposed method has high accuracy and good stability.
