Exploring the Mechanism of Gamified Collaborative Learning from a Perspective of Literature Review
The integration of gamification and collaborative learning can effectively address the challenges associated with students’ lack of motivation and engagement in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review on Gamified Collaborative Learning (GCL) from 2013 to 2023. Search terms identified 78 papers reporting empirical evidence about the implementation and mechanism of GCL. After coding the selected literature, the results show gamified elements, implementation modes, gaming rules of GCL, and learning techniques of GCL. This paper also develops a theoretical framework of GCL to explain its components of motivation, environment, process, and evaluation. The implementation modes of GCL are discussed, along with the implications of GCL practice and recommendations for future research in this field.
