Utilizing Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface to Improve Vehicular Communication Networks Performance

This study aims to analyze the performance and deployment of Intelligent Reconfigurable Surfaces (RISs) in high-frequency (millimeter wave) communication networks in a straight-line vehicle-oriented environment. RIS technology relies on surfaces composed of a large number of controllable elements that intelligently redirect the incoming signal toward users, contributing to improved communication quality and expanded coverage, especially in environments with interrupted line-of-sight. Path loss models are used to calculate the amount of attenuation experienced by the signal as it travels between the transmitter and receiver, whether via direct communication from the base station or through reflection from the RIS surface. The proposed model takes into account several factors, such as distance, environmental characteristics, angles of incidence and reflection, as well as the effect of the number of RIS elements on the reflected signal. Simulation results show that integrating RIS technology to assist vehicular communication will significantly enhance communication performance in multiple scenarios, by passing obstacles and improving coverage efficiency in future vehicleoriented communication systems.
