Barriers to Healthcare Knowledge Management Implementation Based on Doctors’ Perspective: Qualitative Study
The healthcare sector relies heavily on knowledge to ensure quality and standardized care delivery. The integration of information technology and knowledge management practices has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the quality of healthcare services. Some benefits come from utilizing knowledge management, these are improved competitive advantages, innovation, organizational learning, and improved decision-making. However, there is a need to understand barriers to knowledge management implementation in healthcare, that can be useful for improving decision-making and patient care. This qualitative study involved interviews with 9 doctors from different types of healthcare facilities such as primary care and hospital. The study was conducted in Indonesia. The interview was then transcribed and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The findings from the interview were categorized into two: technical and non-technical aspects. The technical aspects are system reliability, capabilities, data completeness, interface difference & integration between healthcare facilities, and security & privacy. The non-technical aspects are doctor tech-savviness, focus on the patient, willingness to document knowledge, perceived benefits, cost prioritization, policy differences between hospitals, geographical location, information paywall, and hospital governance. This study aims to provide guidance on healthcare management, policymakers, and IT practitioners involved in the design and implementation of KM in healthcare facilities.
