Gamification in E-Learning: The Role of Perceived Value in Influencing Student’s Motivation and Engagement

Gamification has long been used in learning to increase student’s motivation and engagement. However, fewer studies investigate the mechanism of gamification elements in influencing motivation and engagement. Thus, this study examines the influence of gamification elements on student’s motivation and engagement through the mediating factor of perceived value. This study employs a quantitative approach to collect data from university students who have used e-learning with gamification for one semester. Of the six hypotheses tested, three hypotheses are accepted. Gamification elements have a direct impact on both perceived value and motivation. Motivation is found to have a direct impact on engagement. However, perceived value does not directly influence motivation and engagement. The possible explanations of these results are discussed.
