Evaluating Pre-Service Teachers' Confidence and Competence in utilizing Artificial Intelligence as Educational Tools

In providing many advantages and chances to enhance teaching and learning, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational tools considerably boosts educators' confidence levels. This study investigated the confidence levels of pre-service teachers (PSTs) in utilizing AI in educational settings, examining the influence of demographic factors, including sex, age, and degree program. A quantitative-descriptive research design was utilized in this study, employing complete enumeration of the target population. A survey was administered to PSTs, revealing a significant majority of male participants compared to female participants. The study found that the differences were statistically significant, where male PSTs exhibited higher mean confidence levels in utilizing AI compared to female PSTs, highlighting the need of addressing sex inequity in teacher education programs. While the mean confidence levels across different age groups showed some variation, suggesting that age alone is not a strong predictor of confidence in utilizing AI. Younger pre-service teachers are more likely to be open and comfortable embracing AI because they have had greater exposure to digital environment. The confidence level for PSTs in the BSEd Math program was lower compared to those in the BS Applied Math program and the BSEd Filipino program. Hence, the study revealed a generally positive attitude towards integrating AI into education, with PSTs expressing confidence in their ability to craft good questions and provide alternative explanations using AI.
