APPLICATION OF HYPERSONIC VEHICLE RE-ENTRY PLASMA FORMATION AND RF BLACKOUT NUMERICAL MODELING BY “HYPERSMS AEROTHERMODYNAMIC”
High-velocity plasma generation during re-entry of spacecraft ionizes atmospheric gases, causing radio frequency blackout and breaking contact with ground stations. Many open-source tools for aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic analysis have been created to solve these issues, including FOSTRAD and DSMC. Under the Alta Scuola Politecnica initiative, the HyperSMS Aerothermodynamic Tool was developed with the goal of reducing heat loads and communication failures in non-winged re-entry vehicles. Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) material selection and trajectory planning are made easier with the help of this MATLAB toolbox, which includes UltraHigh Temperature Ceramics (UHTC).We investigate communication blackout mitigation strategies, such as the Magnetic Window Method, which applies a static magnetic field to reduce plasma-wave interaction. The toolbox combines concepts from aerospace engineering to improve mission success and re-entry vehicle design.
