Crack Detection in Composite Beams Using Soft Computing Tool
The present research attempt proposes a novel crack detection technique using buckling response data trained in fuzzy logic soft computing tool. To this end, carbon/epoxy laminated beams are considered as subject material. By investigating the changes in buckling modes caused by cracks in the laminated beam, an effective crack detection system is developed employing Mamdani model Hybrid fuzzy inference system (FIS) to quantify the crack severity. ABAQUS finite element simulation software is employed to perform the buckling analysis and the fuzzy model is developed using MATLAB platform. For experimental validation, composite beams with artificially introduced cracks are put under static loading using INSTRON 8862 universal testing machine (UTM) and the buckling responses are recorded. The fuzzy outputs are aligned closely with the experimental responses towards crack detection. The integration of buckling analysis, fuzzy logic and experimental validation attempted in this research work contributes to the advancement of crack detection technique in composite structures. The proposed technique offers an efficient and practical solution for identifying cracks in composite beams leading to enhanced safety and reliability in composite based engineering applications.
