Reactive Power Compensation System for the Chilean HVDC Transmission Line
This paper proposes and evaluates a reactive power compensation scheme for the HVDC line to be constructed in Chile soon. The 1500 km line will have a rated power of 3000 MW, in a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$+/-600 \text{kV}$</tex> double circuit, with LCC technology. Reactive power required by the two substations is calculated both for steady state and for transient conditions in case of a short circuit in the HVDC line. The proposed scheme consists of harmonic filters, capacitor banks and dynamic compensation. For dynamic compensation the behavior of the national electric system is simulated by employing synchronous condensers and STATCOM.
