Integration of Photovoltaic and Energy Storage in MVDC Railway Microgrids
The implementation of hybrid energy storage in medium-voltage DC railway microgrids is a key strategy to enhance energy efficiency, stability, and resilience in modern rail networks. This paper explores the systemic role of hybrid Energy Storage Systems (ESS) within MVDC microgrids, in a network management perspective. By leveraging a combination of regenerative braking energy and renewable sources, ESS can optimize power flow, mitigate fluctuations, and improve supply continuity. This study analyzes the theoretical impact of integrating ESS into MVDC railway microgrids, evaluating their potential to: (i) enhance energy management by balancing renewable generation and braking energy; (ii) stabilize voltage and power quality, ensuring reliable operation under dynamic load conditions; and (iii) increase resilience by reducing dependence on traditional grid infrastructure, particularly in interconnected microgrid scenarios. By adopting a systemic approach, this work provides insights into the benefits and challenges of widespread ESS deployment in railway networks, contributing to the development of more sustainable and efficient transportation systems.
