Quadruple-Boost Nine-Level Compact Inverter for Common-Grounded PV System

This paper presents a quadruple boost common-ground multilevel inverter (QBCG-MLI) employing a common-ground method to enhance efficiency and reduce leakage current. The proposed topology is designed to generate nine distinct output voltage levels (±4V<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in</inf>, ±3V<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in</inf>, ±2V<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in</inf>, ±V<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in</inf>, 0) from a single DC supply, achieving a quadruple voltage gain with a reduced switch count of eleven. By eliminating the transformer, the inverter significantly reduces size, cost, and complexity while improving efficiency. The mathematical modelling of the system is derived using an equivalent circuit approach, and the inverter’s performance is analyzed through simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. The QBCG-MLI architecture ensures improved power quality by generating a nearly sinusoidal waveform, thereby minimizing harmonic distortion. The reduction in switching components further enhances the overall efficiency, making the proposed inverter a cost-effective solution for renewable energy applications. The common ground configuration also effectively mitigates leakage current, improving system reliability and safety. The feasibility of the proposed topology is validated through extensive simulation results in both open-loop and closed-loop control modes, demonstrating its viability for practical implementation in grid-connected and standalone applications.
