Entrepreneurship as an Academic Field: Taking Stock and New Directions

Abstract Entrepreneurship has emerged as a vibrant and dynamic field of academic inquiry, capturing the attention of scholars in management and other social science and engineering disciplines. Its significance extends beyond academia to policymakers and practitioners, who recognize entrepreneurship's crucial role in economic development, innovation and societal progress. This introductory study to the special issue summarizes the four papers in the special issue, takes stock of entrepreneurship as a maturing academic field and charts new directions for future research. We also demonstrate how each of the papers is located at the crossroads or intersection of multiple logics and/or disciplines and/or contexts (e.g., geography) and the interaction of these dimensions. Finally, we highlight the dynamic nature of entrepreneurship as an academic field.
