The article is devoted to substantiating the boundaries of the object-subject area of modern linguodidactics, which currently substantiates the methodological foundations of linguistic education, integrating various processes and, above all, the processes of language learning and human language acquisition. The article presents the author’s view on the historical evolution of this subject-object area and its current state, and also describes three levels of academic research in the theory of teaching foreign languages: empirical, theoretical and metatheoretical. The content and functional specifics of each of the levels are shown, and the close relationship between them is revealed, reflecting the complex relationship between linguodidactic theory and educational practice. Special attention is paid to substantiating the connection of linguodidactics and methodology and describing the problems of methodological research in the linguodidactic sphere.
