Energy Security for Sustainable Development of Oil and Gas Sector in Nigeria

Abstract Energy security is a critical component of sustainable development, particularly in resource-rich countries like Nigeria, where the oil and gas sector is a cornerstone of the economy. Despite being one of Africa's largest hydrocarbon producers, Nigeria faces significant energy security challenges, including over-reliance on crude oil exports, inadequate energy access, aging infrastructure, and environmental concerns. This study explores the multidimensional nature of energy security within Nigeria's oil and gas sector, focusing on its implications for sustainable development. Employing a PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental) framework, the research analyzes key factors influencing energy security, including governance issues, economic dependency, social equity, technological constraints, regulatory frameworks, and environmental sustainability. study findings reveal that while opportunities exist in leveraging abundant natural gas reserves, advancing renewable energy integration, and fostering regional energy collaboration, systemic challenges such as policy inconsistencies, corruption, and inadequate infrastructure hinder progress. The study highlights the importance of diversifying Nigeria's energy mix, adopting decarbonization strategies, and strengthening governance to enhance energy security. Recommendations include regulatory reforms, investment in modern energy infrastructure, capacity-building programs, and fostering public-private partnerships to drive sustainable growth in the oil and gas sector. The research underscores the need for a holistic approach involving government, industry, and stakeholders to achieve a secure and sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
