The Alienated Body in George Sanders’ “The Semplica Girl Diaries”
George Saunders’ “The Semplica Girl Diaries”, part of his collection Tenth of December (2013), maintains his terse, humorous and ironic writing style, depicting the alienated body within the context of consumer culture. Body as a significant research object has yet to be thoroughly examined. The paper thus addresses this gap by focusing on the alienated body caused by the consumer society, exploring its nature and its social and cultural roots, as well as the writing intention and the social value of the story. By revealing the alienation of the body, the thesis aims at speaking for the marginalized people whose bodies have been exploited as an operational capital and appeals for the renaissance of humanistic spirit in the consumer society.
