The Dilemma of Bashu Literature as Reflected in the Portrayal of Su Shi in The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature
Since the beginning of the 21st century, Bashu literature has garnered considerable academic attention and achieved notable progress in scholarly research. However, its limited manifestation in the Su Shi chapters of The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature stands in sharp contrast to the substantial academic attention it has received, mirroring the fundamental predicament currently faced by Bashu literature. This study first clarifies the intrinsic connection between Su Shi and Bashu literature, followed by a close reading of the two primary sections on Su Shi in The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature, through which it identifies the marginalization of Bashu literary discourse. Building on this foundation, the paper analyzes the underlying mechanisms from three perspectives: the “superstar” aura surrounding Su Shi and the editorial principles of The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature collectively expose the dual predicaments of weak expressive power and limited cultural influence inherent to Bashu literature. Furthermore, by comparing the representation of Bashu literature in other chapters of The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature with its treatment in domestic Chinese literary histories, this research ultimately reveals the fundamental dilemma that Bashu literature has yet to be constructed as an independent cultural entity. The study concludes by proposing constructive insights for the future development of Bashu literature.
