Intertextual strategies in the communicative-pragmatic organization of literary discourse (based on D. Tartt’s novel “The Secret History”)

The paper examines the phenomenon of intertextuality in the works of contemporary authors, using the novel “The Secret History” by the American writer D. Tartt as an example. The aim of the research is to identify the linguistic characteristics of intertextuality based on a comparison of works of different linguistic genres and traditions, taking into account the communicative-pragmatic approach. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the category of intertextuality in the literary discourse of D. Tartt’s novel “The Secret History” is examined in detail in comparison with the ancient tragedy “The Bacchae” by Euripides, based on a communicative-pragmatic approach. The research findings showed that intertextual connections in “The Secret History” act as structural-semantic components of artistic discourse and also constitute a multi-level semantic organization of the text. The discovered intertextual chains create dialogicity and narrative polyphony, thereby contributing to the realization of the author’s communicative-pragmatic strategies. The tools for including elements of ancient Greek text in modern English-language discourse are described, and linguistic means of representing these elements are also discovered.
