A Critical Review of Research on Kinetic Chain Activation Technique Application in Musculoskeletal Conditions

Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders often arise due to fascial restrictions and disruptions in the kinetic chain function, leading to pain, mobility impairments, and reduced quality of life. Emerging interventions like the Kinetic Chain Activation Technique (KCAT) aim to address these dysfunctions by optimizing fascial tension and neuromuscular control. This critical review aimed to understand the gap in the literature and gain a clear answer regarding the efficacy of KCAT in the MSK conditions. Four databases, PubMed, EBSCO, Embase, and Google Scholar, were used to search for papers. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), clinical trials, case series, and case reports published in English language with or without comparative groups conducted on any MSK conditions that evaluate the efficacy of KCAT between 2020 and 2025. A total of six studies met the eligibility criteria. Two papers were RCTs, one was a comparative study, one was pre–postexperimental study, one was a narrative study, and one was a case report. A critical analysis was conducted on each of these studies, which indicated that its use can have a beneficial effect in reducing many MSK conditions. All studies included in this review reported positive therapeutic effects, indicating that the research findings so far are optimistic and suggest that KCAT is a promising intervention. The limited number of randomized clinical trials and the significant heterogeneity among them prevent firm conclusions regarding the effectiveness of KCAT in MSK conditions. Furthermore, comparative studies with other fascial techniques are necessary to determine whether KCAT holds superior effectiveness.
