A qualitative study in Magelang Central Java Indonesia: Mothers’ knowledge, parenting styles and national priority programs managing of stunting in toddlers

The prevalence of stunting varies significantly across provinces and districts/cities in Indonesia, including in Magelang Regency. This study aimed to identify obstacles to accelerating the reduction of stunting in rural areas in Magelang Regency. This research was conducted using a qualitative method with a case study approach in Magelang Regency, Indonesia, in 2024. Data was collected through: (i) Focus group discussions of mothers with toddlers and health cadres, and (ii) in-depth interviews with key informants involving stakeholders at the district, sub-district, and village levels. Data analysis used thematic analysis. This study focuses on three main themes related to stunting problems. The first theme is maternal and cadre knowledge about child growth and development. The second theme is maternal parenting patterns to support child growth and development, and the third is national strategy program for accelerating stunting reduction, a government priority program. Several inhibiting factors were found that influenced the acceleration of the reduction in stunting prevalence, namely the program to reduce stunting rates that was not optimal, and inadequate knowledge and parenting patterns of mothers. Maternal parenting patterns, maternal and cadre knowledge, and suboptimal stunting reduction programs influence stunting reduction. Recommendations for strategies to accelerate stunting reduction include: improving knowledge and parenting skills of cadres and mothers of toddlers, and increasing program commitment and coordination. • Mothers' knowledge and literacy about child growth and development are crucial. • Improving health status and parenting patterns are essential efforts for mothers to address stunting. • Increasing commitment among regional government organizations to converge on stunting management.
