Methodology of Calculating the Dynamics of Vocabulary Borrowings Due to Linguistic Interaction of Communities

The subject of the research is the development of a methodology for the quantitative analysis of the phenomenon of direct lexical interference, the consequence of which is the complete assimilation of lexical units of one language to lexical units of another language. An example of such analysis is based on a study of the phenomenon of assimilation of Ukrainian philosophical terminology in the Soviet Empire. The main source of term sets are philosophical dictionaries published in the dominant (Russian) language and republished in the assimilated (Ukrainian) language. These dictionaries were published three times approximately 11 years apart. The ability to compare terms in the original and translated dictionaries facilitated the identification of the relationship between the number of Ukrainian terms that were maximally assimilated to the terms of the Russian language and those Ukrainian terms that were not assimilated. For quantitative analysis, all terms were divided into groups: simple one-word terms, one-word terms composed of several bases, and terms composed of several words. In addition to terms, the analyzed dictionaries also contained the names of philosophers and the titles of works by some philosophers. As a result of the study, it was found that about 90 percent of Ukrainian philosophical terms, in the period from the 1920s to 1940, were fully or partially assimilated to terms of the dominant Russian language in the Soviet Empire.
