Chemical Composition of Copper and Bronze Artifacts from Early Iron Age Hoards of the Rock Outcrop Shrines on Shatanov Island, Lake Irtyash, Southern Trans-Urals

The research discloses findings of the chemical composition analysis of non-ferrous metal discovered in treasures of the Shatanov Island cave sanctuaries at the Irtyash Lake, the Southern Urals. The metal chemical composition analysis engages X-ray fluorescence testing, mass-spectrometry and accelerator mass-spectrometry dating by the Novosibirsk State University – Novosibirsk Research Center Accelerator Mass-Spectrometry Common Unit (Novosibirsk). The typology of the item sets is divided into ornithomorphic items, anthropomorphic items, zoomorphic figurines, tree idol, mirror-shaped plaques, three-lobed arrowheads. According to the item typology the sanctuaries are interpreted as ritualistic complexes of the Transurals Early Iron Age Itkul culture. The complexes’ lifetime was between 8th and 4th century BC. It is confirmed by the absolute dating analysis imposed on cinder fragments from copper artifacts (ingot and arrowhead). The study discovered 85 non-ferrous metal artifacts and two iron bloom fragments. The chemical analysis establishes that ‘pure’ copper prevails in the treasures. The share of this metal in different monuments reaches 83–87.5 %. The remaining 12.5–17 % constitute bronze metals such as tin, arsenic-tin, arsenic-antimony, arsenic-antimony, lead-tin, arsenic-lead. The studied treasures include tin bronze. Its share reaches 12.5–15.5 % and proves that a part of metal was imported. At the same time tin-containing copper (12.5–21 %) is evident of partly mixed imported copper-containing bronze and locally mined copper. Determined admixtures in the metal prove that this metal was obtained from copper ores mined at two main ore sources. One of the sources is the Gumyoshevsky mine near Polevskoy town. The other one is an unidentified Ural mine. Artifacts smelted from this ore are mostly typical for the Itkul culture south.
