Validity of Depositional Interpretation from Borehole Image without Integration of Core: A Case Study from Kuwait

Summary This study was carried out to test the accuracy of borehole image interpretation (BHI) for sedimentological analysis using a dataset from Kuwait. A blind image interpretation was followed by calibration with existing core over the interpreted intervals allowed a clarification of facies over uncertain intervals, as well as addressing some differences in the lithology assignment derived from the integration. Whilst the image description has been considered accurate there are environmentally diagnostic features that fall under the image resolution. Missing these subtleties can result in incorrect depositional interpretations, which can be important when it comes to static reservoir modelling. It is therefore considered important to establish a well calibrated core/image dataset for each stratigraphic interval across the study Field prior to focusing on purely image-based interpretations.
