Utilizing Borehole Images for High-Resolution Static Modeling of Thin-Layered Reservoirs. in North Western Desert, Egypt

Summary The Cenomanian Bahariya Formation in Egypt’s Northwestern Desert is a significant hydrocarbon reservoir with clastic and non-clastic deposits. Despite its potential, production from thin-layered sandstone intervals is low. A study aims to characterize these intervals by identifying lithofacies, sedimentological characteristics, and depositional environments, using high-resolution borehole image logs due to poor seismic data. A collaborative workflow was implemented for the top 100 ft of the Middle Bahariya sequence in three wells, involving advanced image processing and interpretation techniques. Sedimentological investigation identified subtidal channels with high sinuosity, interbedded with shallow marine shales and carbonates. Channel body simulation was performed to fit the channel facies data from well intervals. The constructed 3D static model enhances well planning by integrating spatial distribution and geometric characteristics of reservoir facies. This approach improves geological understanding, aiding reservoir characterization, well planning, and field development optimization.
