Examination of wave pattern resistance estimation method by experiments and numerical analyses
The present study examines the wave pattern resistance analysis method the International Towing Tank Conference suggested. The wave elevation field around the scaled model of a container carrier is obtained by three approaches, i.e., the towing tank experiment, the panel method, and multi-phase computational fluid dynamics analysis. By the longitudinal wave cut method, the wave pattern resistance is obtained and compared with conventional wave-making resistance. The wave pattern resistance is smaller than the wave-making resistance for all approaches because of the wave-breaking resistance and linearized feature of the wave pattern resistance analysis. The extrapolation at the ship centerline showed a consistent estimation of wave pattern resistance, although the truncation of the downstream wave pattern is not considered.
