The role of maternal nutrition in pregnancy health and fetal development
Nutrition during pregnancy plays a crucial role in ensuring a favorable obstetrical outcome and optimal fetal development. This article explores the impact of maternal diet and lifestyle on the health of both mother and child, emphasizing the importance of nutritional interventions starting from the preconception period. The article compares international perinatal nutrition guidelines and highlights convergences regarding the fundamental principles of a balanced diet, while also stressing the need to personalize recommendations based on nutritional status, metabolic risk, and cultural context. Particular attention is given to nutritional strategies in high-risk pregnancies, such as those affected by gestational diabetes, maternal obesity, or preeclampsia, presenting specific interventions grounded in current clinical evidence. A multidisciplinary and preventive approach is advocated, in which nutritional counseling becomes a central component of prenatal care. The conclusions support the integration of nutritional policies into public health protocols to promote healthy pregnancies and a more metabolically resilient future generation.
