Same-sitting Cartilage Tympanoplasty Post-foreign Body Removal—A Success Story: A Case Report

REPORTinsertion in the ear.On otoscopy of left ear, wax was present. On wax removal, a greenish shiny foreign body was seen in the middle ear with no remnants of pars tensa visible.Foreign body removal was attempted in the outpatient department, but the attempt was unsuccessful.Hence, the patient was taken up under general anesthesia after taking due consent for postaural approach if need be.On examination under the microscope, the foreign body was found to be a green-colored bead, perforating the entire pars tensa and completely impacted in the middle ear (Fig. 1A).An anterior canal wall overhang was also present, obscuring the complete view of the same.Multiple attempts at its transcanal removal were made, but due to the circular shape and size of the bead and narrow canal, it was found to only rotate inside the middle ear and could not be dislodged out.Hence, postaural approach was undertaken. The meatal skin flap was elevated.Canaloplasty was done to compensate for the anterior canal wall overhang, followed by foreign body removal. The handle of malleus was found to be medialized due to sustained pressure from the bead (Figs 1B andC).The ossicular chain, however, was found to be intact, and the round window reflex was present.A decision was taken on table to venture a tympanoplasty in the same sitting so
