Locked in a fossil-centric system paradigm: LNG expansion impedes socio-ecological transition toward a just and renewable energy future
Kemfert et al. find that expanding LNG infrastructure in Europe enforces the fossil fuel paradigm, is unnecessary for energy security, and delays the socio-ecological transformation toward decentralized, 100% renewable energy systems. The study highlights ecosystem, economic, transformation, and justice risks and urges halting expansion of LNG for a just transition aligned with sustainable development goals.
