Formulation and Evaluation of Millet Supernatant Herbal Face Serum

Background: Utilization of face serums has raised in the present scenario due to its cosmeceutical benefit and augmented ill-effects of pollution. Objective: To develop herbal face serum formulation that is quite economical. Millet supernatant after soaking is wasted in drains. In the present work this supernatant is used to formulate and evaluate economical serum formulation along with aloe vera, sandalwood oil etc. Method: Four different millets were soaked at different time intervals and qualitatively analyzed for the presence of ferulic acid, niacin, benzoic acid, glutamic acid and caffeic acid. Nine different formulations were prepared and tested for homogeneity spreadability. The best formulations were further tested for antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory and Antimicrobial activity. Results: The actives like ferulic acid, niacin, benzoic acid, glutamic acid and caffeic acid were found in detectable quantities after soaking for 6 hrs. pH of 5.9 and 5.4 of F4 and F5 formulations shows the suitability for skin product. The % spread of 60.86 is high for F5 compared to all the other formulations. There is no skin irritancy observed. The viscosity of F4 and F5 formulations was found to be 1228 and 1216 cps respectively. Among F2 - F9 formulations evaluated F4 and F5 showed 54.16% and 62.14% respectively free radical scavenging activity. F1 formulation without millet supernatant showed 48.76% of activity. The anti-inflammatory activity of 37.5% of F5 formulation was effective compared to other formulations. F4 and F5 also showed effective antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. The FTIR spectrum of formulation F5 with different vibrational peaks is responsible for varied activities. Conclusion: Due to an augmented premature ageing or damage happening to dermis ascribed to unavoidable pollution exposure, in today’s world, there is a demand for a premium dermatological product. The present work gives quite economical serum.
