A Numerical Study on Rock Drilling with Abrasive Waterjet Considering Abrasive Particle Size

ABSTRACT: As urban populations grow, the demand for underground space is increasing, but conventional rock excavation methods generate excessive noise and vibration, leading to environmental concerns and resident complaints. Abrasive waterjet technology, which uses high-pressure water and abrasives to cut rock, has emerged as a solution due to its ability to minimize noise, vibration, and mechanical stress on the surrounding ground while avoiding heat-affected zones. The drilling performance of this technology is primarily influenced by the kinetic energy of abrasive particles, which depends on their size. In this study, the effect of abrasive particle size on rock drilling efficiency was numerically analyzed using the discrete element method (DEM). By assessing drilling performance under different conditions, the results provide valuable insights for selecting optimal abrasives, improving excavation efficiency, and reducing environmental impact. These findings contribute to advancing rock excavation technology, supporting more effective and sustainable underground development in urban areas.
