An exploratory study for the feasibility of STF in modifying friction
ABSTRACT: Shear thickening fluid (STF) is a type of non-Newtonian media characterized by a switchable viscosity with velocity. Considering the velocity dependence of frictional behaviors on gouge materials, it is hypothesized that the interaction between STF and gouges will prove beneficial in resisting induced seismic events. This study further investigates the potential of STF in modifying fault frictional behaviors. In velocity-stepping friction experiments, the STF sample can exhibit a slip transition from velocity-weakening to weak velocity-strengthening with an increased rate-and-state friction law parameter (a - b). Interestingly, a strong relationship between Dc and velocity is evident in STF samples, with Dc value markedly enhanced at higher velocities. Under dynamic conditions, the STF sample remains stable throughout the entire friction experiments, whereas stick-slip cycles are observed in the pure gouge sample. This study represents a preliminary investigation into the effects of STF on fault friction behaviors. The results show that the incorporation of STF is advantageous for more stable fault behavior.
