Thermal Loss Estimation in IPMSMs Under Fault Conditions Using UIO and MPC-Based Methods for Fault-Tolerant Control

This paper presents thermal modeling and estimation strategies for permanent magnet synchronous machines under faulty conditions using state-space models derived from lumped parameter thermal networks. The proposed workflow integrates finite-element analysis to investigate inter-turn short-circuit fault dynamics and examine the dependency of fault current on fault conditions and operating points. An unknown input observer combined with a novel model predictive controller based estimator accurately predicts additional thermal losses due to faults. This approach considers the dynamical thermal behavior over a prediction horizon to back-calculate the faultinduced losses, thereby enabling state estimation, fault detection, and fault-tolerant control.
