Unified Converter Platform Design for Light Industrial Application Using Si IGBT
Light industrial applications, such as fans with kilowatt power rating, commercial refrigerator compressors, and air conditioning systems, often utilize both single-phase and three-phase inputs. This necessitates separate voltage ratings for components, typically requiring 600 V and 1200 V IGBTs or MOSFETs for the inverter stage. Boosting the DC link voltage to approximately 540 Vdc can reduce inverter power loss. This boosted DC link voltage allows for a unified voltage rating across both the inverter and associated light industrial motors. With a single-phase input, the power losses of a proposed three-legged totem-pole converter using six IGBTs and two diodes are shown to be comparable to those of a standard three-phase active frontend converter operating from a three-phase input. This study calculates power losses using measurement-based simulations and evaluates the resulting thermal performance.
