Simulation and Experimental Validation of Cross-Switched Reconfigurable Battery

The advancements in semiconductor and microcontroller technologies, coupled with the increasing demand for reduced <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{CO}_{2}$</tex> emissions, have resulted in a growing interest in alternative modes of electric transportation and new methods for generating and distributing energy. One such alternative is the use of reconfigurable battery packs, which offer a promising solution to the limitations of conventional battery packs. This paper presents the design of such a reconfigurable battery pack based on Cross-Switched topology and its associated control algorithm, simulations in the Simulink environment are provided to support the design. In order to validate the balancing algorithm performance, experiments and measurements were conducted using battery emulators, a cell controller board specifically developed for the pack, Raspberry Pi 4 as the control and communication unit and developed software that replicates the simulation environment.
